The different types of BOMA standards: As we speak about the BOMA standard, we may often be unaware that this abbreviation refers to as many as 6 different standards applicable to buildings with different functions.

The most popular standard dedicated to office buildings is entitled Office Buildings: Standard Methods of Measurement (ANSI/BOMA Z65.1 – 2010). Another type of BOMA standard applies to industrial buildings: Industrial Buildings: Standard Methods of Measurement (ANSI/BOMA Z65.2—2012). The standards for residential buildings are the following: Multi-Unit Residential Buildings: Standard Methods of Measurement (ANSI/BOMA Z65.4—2010). Gross Areas of a Building: Standard Methods of Measurement (ANSI/BOMA Z65.3—2009)- used to determine the gross areas of buildings with different functions. Areas of malls and other commercial locations are calculated according to Retail Buildings: Standard Methods of Measurement (ANSI/BOMA Z65.5—2010), while mixed-function buildings, i.e. those where many different types of operations are available, dwelling included, are calculated as per Mixed-Use Properties: Standard Methods of Measurement (ANSI/BOMA Z65.6—2012)
